1. How Many Years Have You Been in Construction Safety?

I’ve been in construction safety for about 6 months now. Before that, I worked in the field for about 4 years as an inspector. I’m very happy I made the switch!

2. What’s One Thing You Learned While Working in Construction Safety?

How truly important safety is. We’re the only team within a company whose whole purpose is to benefit other workers. I think ergonomic changes are the best example of this. In the past, I’ve had a contracting crew complain to me about how their backs hurt at the end of the day. I was able to communicate this concern to management and get the crew different equipment that helped them. I was happy to make a difference in their day-to-day experience and allow them to feel more safe on the job.

3. What Advice Would You Give Women Looking for a Career in this Industry?

Don’t be freaked out! Just be curious and ask questions; you will get answers. I came into construction with no background experience. My mom makes wedding cakes and my dad was a convenience store manager; just about as far away from construction as you can get. It is very rewarding watching a jobsite change overtime. Seeing something go from a field of grass to a hospital? That’s outstanding.

4. What Are Some Challenges That Women Face in the Industry?

More often than not I will be the only women present on a jobsite. Sometimes I have to take a deep breath and remind myself that its ok to be the only woman and I deserve to be here. You must remind yourself to stay strong and speak your mind.

On the flip side, when I do see another woman on site it’s an instant bond.  It’s an, “Ok- we’re both in this together” feeling. We look out for each other a little extra.

5. Are You Currently Working on Any Interesting Projects You Can Share with Us?

I am currently working at an aluminum processing plant in Cressona, PA. The project is a powerplant/ chimney stack demolition. The building was built in 1942 and has been out of operation for 20+ years. The scaffolding for the chimney stack demolition is going to start to be installed soon! The stack is the icon of the town, so we’re likely going to draw attention once it starts so it will be critical to make sure this is done safely.  I’m excited to be a part of something this important.
