October: Make Hearing Safety a Priority

Health and Safety,

Hearing is one of the most vital senses the human body has to offer — yet it’s often taken for granted until it’s too late. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 1 billion young people ages 12–35 are at risk of hearing loss due to unsafe listening practices. Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 1 in 4 U.S. adults with hearing damage say it was caused by noise at work.

The good news? Noise-induced hearing loss is completely preventable with a few simple habits.

Limit Exposure to Loud Noises

Noise-induced hearing loss can occur when you’re exposed to sounds over 85 decibels (dB) for extended periods. Common sources include concerts, power tools, and lawnmowers. To reduce your risk:

  • Keep the volume below 60% when using headphones.

  • Use noise-canceling headphones to avoid turning up the volume.

  • Take “quiet breaks” during loud events to give your ears a rest.

Wear Hearing Protection

When exposure to loud noise is unavoidable, use proper protection.

  • Earplugs or noise-reducing earmuffs can lower sound levels by 15–30 dB.

  • Workers in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and aviation should always wear job-appropriate hearing protection.

A recent study found that only 20% of people exposed to loud noise used hearing protection, underscoring the need for greater awareness and training.

Get Regular Hearing Checks

Early detection is key to long-term hearing health. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) recommends hearing screenings:

  • Every 10 years for adults under 50

  • Every 3 years for adults over 50

In addition, OSHA requires annual hearing evaluations for employees in organizations that maintain a Hearing Conservation Program.

Why It Matters

Hearing loss doesn’t just affect communication — it can lead to social isolation, cognitive decline, and reduced quality of life. The CDC has even linked untreated hearing loss in older adults to an increased risk of dementia.

Protecting your hearing is a lifelong investment. With simple precautions, awareness, and regular check-ups, you can preserve your hearing well into old age.
