To celebrate women in construction week, we are highlighting women on our construction safety team. Meet Shaina-

How Many Years Have You Been In Construction Safety?

I have been in the industry for about seven years now. Before joining CMI, I worked at Merck. Prior to that, I was a chemical operator and USW safety representative at Philadelphia Energy Solutions; this is how I got into construction safety.

Women In Construction Has Recently Grown Over The Years. Why Do You Think More Women Are Joining The Construction Industry?

I think there is more awareness now. Ten years ago, no one discussed women working in the construction industry. Now, women know opportunities are out there for them.

What’s One Thing You Learned While Working On The Construction Safety Side?

You have to have a lot of patience. You are working with different personalities. In my experience, when I was at a job site, I was looked at as a regulator or inspector. However, I had to reassure them I was there to help and keep them safe. When working on construction jobs, I like to develop trust. I assure the workers I am there from a safety perspective to help guide and train them. I want to make sure they trust me; so they feel comfortable when I’m around.

What Advice Would You Give Women Looking To Get Into Construction Safety?

I would say- do it! I believe this is a well-paying industry, and the industry will be around for a long time. In my opinion, there are not enough women in the construction safety industry. When I started my career, I was unaware of all the different degrees and certifications you could receive in this industry. I would also say get a lot of experience by being out on the field. Make sure you are proactive in developing relationships and meeting the laborers and construction workers. Remember, you are there to help them.

What Certifications Do You Need For This Industry?

To get started in this industry, you need OSHA 10 and OSHA 30. I would also recommend completing the Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) certification.

Are You Currently Working On Any Construction Safety Projects?

I recently did an OSHA 30 training for a commercial building company in Lancaster, PA. I have been developing their OSHA 30 training and slides.

Based On Your Experience, What’s the Most Rewarding Thing About This Industry?

The most rewarding thing for me is making jobs easier for others. When working in this industry, there can be a lot of paperwork, prep work, JSAs to get in place and approved, jobs you have to hold down prior to starting the development. Also, there are a lot of deadlines to meet, it can be stressful working in these conditions, but I make it easier and less stressful for clients. Clients have actually thanked me personally for my efforts!
