Did You Know there were 174,199 OSHA recordable incidents in the construction industry in 2020? That equates to 670 a day and 83 an hour.  And that is just those that were reported.

One of the ways we help to prevent construction injuries is by conducting impactful and interactive educational events. On October 6, CMI participated in a proactive safety stand-down to emphasize the impact of injuries due to falls from 15 feet or less. Our Construction Safety Specialists teamed up with a construction management firm to host a tailgate lunch served outside on a beautiful fall day. Workers representing six subcontracting firms, along with five owner representatives and the firm’s project team enjoyed the event.  CMI’s Chuck Dornisch explained the statistics surrounding falls in construction and the importance of following fall prevention protocols to ensure job sites are safe. During this talk, everyone was asked to imagine how their work and personal lives might change if they lost the use of their dominate arm during a fall.

To drive the point home, everyone was given the opportunity to throw a football at a target 30 feet away using their non-dominant arm. Following that, they had the opportunity to throw a bean bag at a cornhole target with their non-dominate arm. A gift card incentive was offered to anyone who scored a hole-in-one in cornhole to further engage participation.

Following the event, several people commented that they enjoyed the interactive stand-down and how it will make them think a bit more before working at heights. A foreman with more than 25 years in the industry said, “the stand-down was the most memorable one I ever attended because it forced me to think about losing the use of my right arm if I fell on the job”.  The statistics and conversation got them thinking, but the hands-on activity drove the point home. Everyone got to experience how challenging a simple task can be without being able to use of their dominate arm.
