CMI is proud to be a part of a team that brought manufacturing operations back to the campus at 9000 River Road in Pennsauken, NJ (formerly Aluminum Shapes). In October, Pennsauken Mayor Jessica Rafeh and other municipal officials were on hand for the ribbon cutting of the property to mark the restart of manufacturing operations. The facility now houses two aluminum manufacturers: Western Extrusions and ALMAG Aluminum. The ribbon cutting marked a momentous occasion in local manufacturing that will keep – and add – vital jobs in Pennsauken.

As part of an integrated team, CMI assisted Velocity Ventures by navigating a number of technically complex facility restart issues. The issues varied from major source air permitting, an air toxics evaluation, environmental justice outreach efforts, stormwater compliance updates, as well as ownership and tenant challenges for future compliance.

CMI worked hand in hand with Velocity Ventures and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) to renew a Title V Operating Permit that lapsed due to inaction by the prior owners; and to navigate updated air toxics evaluations to allow the facility to resume operations under certain restrictions.  In addition, the CMI team helped with public outreach as recommended by New Jersey Administrative Order 2021-25 (AO 2021-25), which included coordination with the NJDEP Office of Permitting and Project Navigation, public notices, a public outreach hearing session, and communication with community leadership.  These efforts required CMI to team up with Velocity Ventures personnel, their primary counsel (Klehr, Harrison, Harvey Branzburg LLP), multiple bureaus at the New Jersey DEP, and the prospective (and eventual) tenants, Almag Aluminum and Western Extrusions. The end result of extensive efforts brought a manufacturing campus back into operation stimulating hiring and regrowth in the local economy.

We are proud of the hard work and effort put in by Chris Maye, P.E. Environmental Services Project Manager and Amy Ulrich, Environmental Services Associate to assist this site in regaining its Operation Permit to bring back much needed manufacturing in the region.

CMI remains committed to assisting the site and its tenants with quality environmental consulting services.
